What is a Sommelier?

Definition

A sommelier (pronounced sum-mell-yay) is a knowledgeable wine professional, fully trained in the service of wine, with a deep understanding of how food and wine work together.

Sommeliers are typically employed in fine restaurants where their main responsibilities may include: compiling wine lists, ordering and storing wine, inventory and cellar management, wine cost management, staff training, giving recommendations on wine purchases and food and wine pairing, taking wine orders, serving wine, etc.

Not all sommeliers are employed by restaurants, however. Sommeliers may also be employed in hotels, spas, resorts, cruise ships, wineries, wine shops, etc.

Sommeliers may also be employed as wine importers, wine agents, wine consultants, wine educators, wine writers and journalists, judges at wine competitions, etc.
